Druid and The Royal Court Theatre present Leaves by Lucy Caldwell

"‘We are where we come from?’  That's not true.  That's not true because if that's true there's no hope for any of us.”

Druid returned to the intimate setting of Chapel Lane in March for a limited run with an award winning new play from playwright and novelist Lucy Caldwell.

Leaves, directed by Garry Hynes, includes a cast of Conor Lovett, Fiona Bell and Kathy Rose O’Brien along with newcomers Alana Brennan, Daisy Maguire, and Penelope Maguire.

Lori is coming home from her first term at university. It’s only been a few weeks and already things have gone badly wrong.  But none of the rest of the family knows, or understands, what really happened.

This fiercely observed family drama sees three teenage girls struggle to define who they are, and why, and where they might be going.

Young Belfast-born writer Lucy Caldwell was the recipient of the 2006 George Devine Award for Leaves, the premier award for new writing by an emerging playwright in the UK and Ireland. Caldwell’s haunting and lyrical debut novel, Where They Were Missed, was published in March 2006 by Penguin (Viking) and was short-listed for the 2006 EDS Dylan Thomas Prize. Lucy Caldwell was also presented with a Special Commendation award for Leaves at the 2007 Susan Smith Blackburn awards ceremony in New York in March.

Druid’s collaboration with Caldwell sees her join an illustrious group of previous George Devine winners whose work has been produced by Druid, including Martin McDonagh (who won with The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1996), Enda Walsh (who won with Disco Pigs in 1997 and whose play The Walworth Farce was produced by Druid last spring) and Stuart Carolan (who was joint winner with Defender of the Faith in 2005 and whose play Empress of India – was produced by Druid and had a sell out run at the Abbey Theatre as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival 2006).

Leaves will have a limited Galway run in Chapel Lane of ten performances only before it transfers to London where it will play the Jerwood Theatre Upstairs at the Royal Court from March 14th.
