Druid returns to the Gaiety with Sharon's Grave
14th October 2003

Druid’s critically acclaimed production of Sharon’s Grave, the classic John B Keane play, returns by public demand to the Gaiety Theatre Dublin (for 12 performances only) from Monday 3rd November. The production, directed by Garry Hynes and designed by Francis O’Connor, was the sell-out hit of this year’s Dublin Theatre Festival and has received extensive critical acclaim from national and international media.

The Guardian described the production as ‘inspired’ and one which sees Druid ‘continuing to set the Irish standard’ before going on to describe Frankie Mc Cafferty’s performance of Dinzie Conlee as ‘astonishing’ and ‘the role of a lifetime’. The Irish Times lauded the ‘immense performances’, describing the production as ‘breathtaking’. The Irish Examiner described it as ‘powerful’ and ‘brilliant’, with Mc Cafferty’s performance again being hailed as ‘the performance of a lifetime’. The Irish Independent gave it a 5 star review and described the production as ‘epic’; The Sunday Tribune as ‘mesmerising and hypnotic’ and The Sunday Business Post as ‘ a provocative theatrical high’.

RTE Radio’s Morning Ireland described the production as ‘absolutely remarkable and really powerful’; RTE Radio One’s Arts Show Rattlebag said the production was ‘one of the definite highlights of the Festival’ and over on 2FM broadcaster Gerry Ryan said it ‘was very exciting indeed…an extraordinary evening’

The production features a stellar Irish cast including Catherine Walsh, Tom Hickey, David Herlihy, Frankie Mc Cafferty, Tom Vaughan Lawlor and Michael FitzGerald in a major new production of what is arguably Keane’s most extraordinary play about the struggle between the forces of good and evil and the mythical beliefs of 1930’s rural Ireland. Druid’s production of Sharon’s Grave is the company’s second of a John B Keane play and follows its award-winning production of Sive last year. Garry Hynes had previously directed John B Keane’s ‘Big Maggie’ during her term as Artistic Director of the Abbey Theatre.

The Druid production of Sharon’s Grave returns to the Gaiety for two weeks only from Monday 3rd to Saturday 15th of November. For ticket details see www.gaietytheatre.com
