February 16th, 2009 At the prestigious 2009 Irish Film & Television Awards (IFTA) ceremony on Saturday February 14th, the film Hunger received a phenomenal six awards including the award for Best Film. Written by Enda Walsh ( The New Electric Ballroom;The Walworth Farce) and Steve McQueen, Hunger follows the last six weeks in the life of Republican Bobby Sands, the IRA hunger striker who died in the Maze prison in 1981. Hunger has received numerous accolades including the Camera d'Or award since it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. Meanwhile, the Druid production of Enda Walsh's play, The New Electric Ballroom, received its Australian premiere when it opened at the Perth International Arts Festival on February 17th.
