DruidSynge receives widespread acclaim in the US

In what was a fitting end to a terrific year for Druid, "DruidSynge" was listed in a number of prominent US publications as one of the cultural highlights of 2006.

New York Times critic Charles Isherwood singled it out for glowing praise in his Top 10 of the year "Garry Hynes and her Druid Theater Company, based in Galway, Ireland, staged the whole canon of J.M. Synge in a daylong marathon, imported by the Lincoln Center Festival. The funny-sad music of Synge's words has probably never been played with such grit, joy and majesty. This was a highlight not just of my theatergoing year, but of my theatregoing life."   NEW YORK TIMES December 25th 2006

The New York Star Ledger critic Michale Sommers described the DruidSynge production as one which “…offered the sorts of experiences that viewers will forever remember.”  And also that “the Druid Theatre Company's "DruidSynge" cycle of six Irish classics was a remarkable feat.” NEW YORK STAR LEDGER December 26th 2006

Star Tribune critics Rohan Preston and Graydon Royce described DruidSynge as the “Outstanding theatrical event of the year” in their Best of Twin Cities (Minneapolis and St.Paul) area theatre in 2006. THE STAR TRIBUNE December 29th 2006.

In 2005 Druid presented the first ever staging of all six stage-plays of John Millington Synge. Directed by Garry Hynes, assisted by regular collaborators Francis O’Connor (design), David Bolger (movement), Sam Jackson (music), Davy Cunningham (lighting), Kathy Strachan (costumes) and John Leonard (sound), the productions feature a roll call of the greatest contemporary Irish acting talent including Marie Mullen, Mick Lally, Eamon Morrissey and Catherine Walsh alongside many of Ireland’s finest emerging young stars including Aaron Monaghan and Gemma Reeves.

Other critically acclaimed Druid productions in 2006 were, The Walworth Farce by Enda Walsh, The Year of the Hiker by John B. Keane, and Empress of India by Stuart Carolan.
