DruidSynge, widely regarded as one of the most ambitious undertakings in Irish theatre for many years, will premiere at the 28th Galway Arts Festival in July, opening at the Town Hall Theatre in Galway on Saturday 16th July followed by national and international performances. In what promises to be a cultural experience of a lifetime, this collective presentation of all of John Millington Synge's work fulfills a long-term artistic commitment by Druid Theatre Company's Tony Award winning director Garry Hynes to re-evaluate and re-engage with one of Ireland's dramatic giants. It is the first time that all of Synge's plays have been performed together and will involve a company of actors performing across the repertoire with an additional support team of technicians, designers, stage management and support personnel working behind the scenes. An unforgettable cultural experience, this landmark tribute celebrating the life and work of the world's greatest playwrights can be enjoyed over one, two or three days. Directed by Garry Hynes, assisted by regular collaborators Francis O'Connor (design), David Bolger (movement), Sam Jackson (music), Davy Cunningham (lighting) and Kathy Strachan (costumes), the productions feature a roll call of Irish acting talent including Marie Mullen, Mick Lally, Eamon Morrissey and Catherine Walsh alongside some of Ireland's finest emerging young stars such as Aaron Monaghan who plays Christy Mahon. Druid is renowned for its award-winning work on the Irish repertoire including new productions of classics as well as nurturing the work of a new generation of Irish writers. Druid premiered the work of Martin Mc Donagh both in Ireland and internationally and Garry Hynes has the distinction of being the first woman ever to win a Tony for directing (a Tony Award for Best Director in 1998 for Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane and a Tony nomination in 1999 for her direction of Mr. McDonagh's The Lonesome West).
