About The Mick Lally Theatre

The Mick Lally Theatre, in the heart of Galway city, is a beautiful intimate venue where Druid creates all of its work. It is situated in the heart of Galway in one of the oldest parts of the city.

Since Druid first opened its doors as a theatre in 1979, world-class performances have taken place there notably Siobhán McKenna as Mommo in Bailegangaire and Mick Lally, Marie Mullen and Sean McGinley in The Playboy of the Western World.

The theatre also plays host to a wide range of events including festivals, launches, music, comedy, talks and readings, as well as theatre shows from visiting companies. Druid aims to support the development and the promotion of the arts in Galway and hopes that The Mick Lally Theatre can play an active role in this.

The building consists of:

• An auditorium with a capacity of 90
• A large foyer
• An upstairs rehearsal room with shower and toilet facilities

The Theatre and its Name

Down through the years, Druid Lane has gone by numerous names; Red Earls Lane, Chapel Lane, Courthouse Lane (a courthouse was formerly situated at the Flood Street end of the lane) and since 1996, Druid Lane, when Galway City Council renamed the lane for Druid’s 21st birthday.

A production of Brecht’s Threepenny Opera was the inaugural production on 19th May 1979 when Druid first moved into the space.

Theatre Refurbishment

In July 2009, Druid opened their refurbished theatre following an extensive and much needed refurbishment. A production of The Gigli Concert by Tom Murphy celebrated the opening of the refurbished theatre on July 18th, 2009. Druid’s administration offices are situated in a separate building located around the corner from the theatre on Flood Street.
