About Druid
Druid was founded in Galway as the first professional theatre company in Ireland, to be based outside Dublin. The company tours Ireland and key global centres, making Druid one of the best known Irish theatre companies in the English speaking world. In 2009 alone, Druid toured to Australia, Canada, the UK and the USA presenting 364 performances in 26 venues. Since 1979, the company has had its own theatre on Druid Lane in Galway. The theatre is the birthplace of all Druid’s work and continues to serve as a facility for the promotion and development of the arts in Galway. Through its writing programme, Druid nurtures and supports new playwriting talents and consistently commissions, develops, and produces new plays by a wide range of emerging and established writers from Ireland and abroad. In the past fifteen years, Druid has premiered 23 new plays, 14 of which were the professional debut for the writer, demonstrating the company’s commitment to new writing.
Druid passionately believes that audiences have a right to see first class professional theatre without having to travel long distances outside their own communities. Since 1978 the company has toured Ireland and since 1982 has toured extensively overseas. The Cripple of Inishmaan by Martin McDonagh won five prestigious New York theatre awards in 2009 after it transferred to the Atlantic Theater in New York from Galway. It was also the best-selling production up to that time at the award-winning theatre. The production of The Beauty Queen of Leenane, which played in a parish hall in Bangor-Erris, rural Ireland, was the same production that played at the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway and won Druid four Tony awards including Best Director for Garry Hynes, the first woman to win the award. Most recently, in February 2012, Druid completed the last of 58 performances of Big Maggie, in 10 venues over 10 weeks, playing to record breaking audiences of over 32,500 people solidifying Druid’s ongoing commitment to bringing theatre to audiences throughout Ireland.
