Garry Hynes has won the Best Director Award at the Theatre Awards UK, which were presented at London’s historic Guildhall by the TMA (Theatrical Management Association) on Sunday October 28, 2012.

The awards were hosted by television presenter, Anneka Rice, and entertainment was provided by two of UK theatre’s much-loved performers, Clive Rowe and Jess Robinson. The Best Director Award was presented to Garry Hynes by actors Gwen Taylor and Don Harrington.

Commenting on her win, Director Garry Hynes said:

“I can’t think of a better way to end what has been a simply wonderful time working on these three great plays by Tom Murphy with such an extraordinary ensemble. I would like to dedicate this award to Tom Murphy and to all those, on and off stage, who’ve helped to make DruidMurphy happen. I’d also like to thank Druid’s UK partners, Edward Hall at the Hampstead Theatre and Michelle Dickson at the Oxford Playhouse for inviting Druid to perform in the UK this year.”

Theatre Awards UK is the only nationwide awards scheme to honour creative excellence and the outstanding achievement seen on and off stage throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. For a full list of all the winners and nominees, please click here.

DruidMurphy – Plays by Tom Murphy opened at the Hampstead Theatre, London on June 23rd and also played the Oxford Playhouse in August. The 21-week tour concluded on October 20th at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC following 100 performances in Ireland, England and the USA.

DruidMurphy would not have been possible without the support of The Arts Council who funded the original staging of this production, and Culture Ireland who supported the international touring. Druid would also like to acknowledge their co-producing partners on DruidMurphy – Quinnipiac University Connecticut, NUI Galway, Lincoln Center Festival and Galway Arts Festival.
