Druid today announced that the company purchased the building known as Lowstrand House, Flood Street, where Druid offices are currently housed.
Tonight we will unveil a proposal to Galway City Council to transform the three story building, which backs onto the Mick Lally Theatre on Druid Lane. The development could be done by 2020, in time for the city’s tenure as European Capital of Culture, if successful. The Mick Lally Theatre would remain as a smaller performance and rehearsal space and a larger 240-seat theatre would be built alongside it. Druid would continue as a producing company, staging and touring work, while the building would centre on artist development, education, festivals, events, and community engagement.
Commenting on the purchase and potential development, Artistic Director, Garry Hynes said: “The purchase is an investment in the future of Druid and theatre in the west, the space would become a creative hub in he heart of the city, and not only offers opportunities for Druid but for the whole artistic community in Galway, especially in the development of new artists and new work”
